Every gold rush draws people selling shovels that don't work, and the AI rush is no different. Job-seekers and anyone hoping to earn a little extra are being hit with fake "AI jobs," get-rich-with-AI courses, AI-generated fake recruiters and listings, and tools that charge for what's free — while AI also makes the old job scams slicker than ever. Strip off the shiny new costume and it's the same handful of cons underneath.

The one idea: if something promises easy money "with AI," or makes you pay or hand over ID to get a job, it's an old scam in an AI costume — upfront fees, too-good pay, urgency, untraceable payment, and "pay to get paid."

The shapes they take

"Make money with AI" courses & "done-for-you" hustles

Coaching, courses, and "automations" promising passive AI income. The only one reliably earning is the person selling the course; the dream is the product.

Fake AI-company jobs & recruiters

AI-generated listings and slick fake recruiters — sometimes even deepfake video interviews — designed to harvest your ID and data, charge "equipment" or "training" fees, or run an overpayment/fake-check scam ("deposit this, send some back").

"The AI does the work — you just pay for the tool/leads"

Pay for access, a "license," or "leads," then recruit others — the reselling-free-tools and pyramid-shaped end of it.

Paying for free (or fake) AI

Apps charging a premium for what the free tool already does, or "AI" products that are an empty wrapper — or nothing — behind a confident pitch.

Old scams, now AI-slick

Flawless phishing emails, a cloned voice of "your boss" asking for gift cards, a deepfake executive on a video call approving an urgent transfer. AI removes the typos and tells that used to give scams away.

The tells

A real job never asks you to pay. Not for training, equipment, a "starter kit," or a background check by gift card.
"Guaranteed" or huge easy income is bait. If it were that easy and certain, they wouldn't need to recruit you.
Verify the company yourself. Find its real site and contact independently; don't trust the listing, the DM, or the recruiter's link.
Never pay to get paid. No gift cards, crypto, or wire transfers for a "job," ever.
Overpayment = fraud. "Deposit this check and send part back" is always a scam; the check bounces and the money you sent is gone.
Urgency + secrecy = scam. "Start today, don't tell anyone, act now" is pressure doing the con's work.

If a "boss" or "executive" asks by message, call, or video for an urgent payment, gift cards, or a transfer — stop and verify. AI can clone a voice and fake a face. Confirm through a known channel (call them back on a number you already have) before moving any money.

If you've been hit

Move fast and don't be ashamed — these are engineered to fool sharp people:

Stop paying and stop sending money, checks, or documents immediately.
Contact your bank / card — for transfers, deposited checks, or charges; ask about reversing or a chargeback.
Lock down what you shared — change passwords, and if you sent ID, watch for identity theft and consider a credit freeze.

The cruelest thing about these is who they target: people looking for work or trying to get a little ahead, exactly when hope makes the dream easy to sell. Keep the one rule bolted down — real work pays you; it never asks you to pay first — and the AI costume falls right off. When in doubt, slow down, verify the company yourself, and remember that "easy money with AI" is, almost always, someone making easy money off you.
