πŸ›‘οΈ Hold Your Own

Facing power in modern life β€” the essentials on one page. Free. Works offline. Copy and share.

The one rule under all of it: power works by rushing you. Slow down, get it in writing, and check on a channel you chose yourself. Almost nothing real is lost by waiting an hour.
When power targets you

Scams & manipulation

  • Urgency + secrecy = scam. Hang up and call back on a number you look up.
  • Never pay by gift card, crypto, or bank transfer to someone who contacted you.
  • A cloned voice is real now β€” agree a family code word for emergencies.
  • A real bank/agency never needs your password, OTP, or remote access.
When you build or buy AI

Using AI wisely

  • It is confidently wrong sometimes β€” verify anything that matters, don't share secrets.
  • Keep a human in charge of anything you can't undo.
  • Buying AI? Ask for error rates, a real pilot, and who's accountable when it's wrong.
  • "Fully autonomous / 100% accurate" is a reason to be more skeptical.
When systems decide about you

Know the machine

  • Your feed sells your attention β€” turn off autoplay, curate hard.
  • A machine screens your job application first β€” mirror the posting, keep formatting simple.
  • Check your credit report (free) and dispute errors β€” they're common.
  • Prices can be personalized β€” compare, and try a private/incognito window.
When you hold power over others

Wield it well

  • Power quietly stops you hearing the truth β€” make honesty safe, and thank it.
  • Your offhand words land heavy now β€” say less, more deliberately.
  • Compliance isn't agreement. Ask what you're getting wrong, and mean it.
  • Sleep on anything you can't undo.
When an institution gets it wrong

Push back

  • The first "no" is a filter, not a verdict β€” most wrong calls get reversed.
  • Get the decision in writing; log dates, names, reference numbers.
  • Complain formally, in writing, with a clear deadline. Then escalate.
  • Still no? Go to the ombudsman/regulator, or ask your bank for a chargeback.

If money or information is already gone

  • Call your bank now β€” ask them to stop/reverse it and protect your accounts. Speed matters most.
  • Report it. US: reportfraud.ftc.gov (identity: identitytheft.gov). UK: Action Fraud 0300 123 2040. India: 1930 / cybercrime.gov.in.
  • Beware "recovery" help that asks for a fee or more details β€” that's a second scam.
  • Tell someone you trust. Shame is the scammer's tool; saying it out loud breaks it.
