Run a 15-Minute Scam-Defense Session

A simple script for anyone helping others stay safe β€” librarians, senior-center volunteers, bank staff, teachers, or just family at the kitchen table.

What you need

  • A phone or laptop to open the interactive toolkit (online, or the offline files you have).
  • A few printed copies of the one-page handout β€” one per person.
  • 15 minutes and one or more people. Works one-on-one or with a small group.

The run sheet

  • 0–2 minWhy this matters. AI can now copy a loved one's voice and write flawless scam messages β€” you can't reliably hear or see the fake anymore. The good news: the defense is a few simple habits. (Share one real example: a fake "grandchild in trouble, send money now" call.)
  • 2–6 minSet a family code word. Everyone picks a word only their close family would know β€” a shared private memory, never anything posted online β€” and writes it on the handout. Read out the three rules together.
  • 6–10 minPractice one call. Open Safe Call and run one drill out loud together (the cloned-voice one). The whole point is the reflex: ask the code word, then hang up and call back on a known number.
  • 10–13 minShow the other two. Open Spot the Scam (for a suspicious message) and Verify Before You Trust (for a claim or post). Just show they exist and how quick they are β€” so people remember them when they're unsure.
  • 13–15 minHand out the page and close. Give everyone the printable, restate the three rules, and ask them to teach one other person this week. That's how it spreads.

The few things that must land

  • Urgency + secrecy + an unusual payment (gift cards, crypto, wire, UPI, "move your money") = stop.
  • Verify on a channel you start β€” hang up and call back on a number you look up. For family, ask the code word.
  • Hanging up to check is always okay. Real urgency survives a two-minute pause.
  • Never share an OTP/code or password, and if it already happened, it is not your fault β€” act fast and report it.

Tips for the room

  • Keep it warm, not scary. The goal is confidence, not fear. People freeze when ashamed.
  • Let them do it. Hands on the phone, saying the words out loud β€” that builds the reflex, not a lecture.
  • Tell a story. One real case lands harder than ten warnings.
  • No shaming, ever. These scams fool smart, careful people by design.
