What to do

  • Find the APR and the total you'll repay. Compare that total to what you're actually borrowing. If you can't find the yearly rate or the all-in cost, treat that as the answer β€” and walk away.
  • Never borrow against your essentials. A loan tied to your car title, your paycheck, or direct access to your bank account can cost you the very thing you need to live and earn.
  • Don't roll it over. If you can't repay on time, that's the signal to stop and get help β€” not to renew for another fee. Rollovers are how a small loan becomes a long trap.
  • Check cheaper options first. A credit-union small-dollar loan, an employer pay advance, or a payment plan / hardship program from whoever you owe is almost always cheaper than a payday or title loan.
  • Free help is real β€” and upfront-fee "help" is not. Nonprofit credit counseling can build a payoff plan for free or low cost. Anyone charging a big upfront fee to "fix" or "settle" your debt is often the next trap.
  • Already in a spiral? It's not hopeless. Stop new borrowing, list everything you owe, and get free nonprofit counseling to make a plan β€” see Break the Debt Spiral.
