What this is
Wits About You is a collection of small, practical toolkits for keeping your footing in a complicated world: spotting scams, dealing with debt and bills, renting, work, healthcare, caring for someone, a death in the family, disasters, digital security, your legal rights, and more. Each one is plain-language, gets to the point, and is written for real life under pressure — not for people with money and lawyers to spare.
What it is not
It's general information to help you think and act — not professional legal, financial, or medical advice, and not a substitute for it. Laws, rights, benefits, and procedures vary enormously from country to country and change over time, so treat examples as the idea and check the rules where you live. For anything high-stakes, get a qualified professional — and these guides will help you ask sharper questions when you do.
Why it's free
It's dedicated to the public domain (CC0) — the most permissive there is. That means no cost, no accounts, no ads, no products to upsell, and no catch. You can copy it, change it, translate it, and re-publish it anywhere, for any purpose, without asking permission. Help against confusion and pressure spreads best when no one owns it and anyone can hand it to someone who needs it.
Your privacy — and how to check it yourself
There are no accounts, no sign-ups, no analytics, no tracking, and no cookies. Nothing you type or tick in any of the interactive tools is saved or sent anywhere — it stays in your browser and disappears when you close the page. Nothing here loads from any outside company: no fonts, no scripts, no images pulled from elsewhere.
Don't take our word for it: turn off your internet (airplane mode) and every page still works perfectly — because there's nothing to load from anywhere else, and nothing to phone home. A tool that teaches you to be careful should have nothing to hide, and this one doesn't.
About the Spanish
The whole suite is available in Spanish, marked as a draft pending review by a native speaker. The English version is the reference if anything differs. (A few country-specific action tools stay in English for now.) If you speak both languages and want to improve a translation, please do — it's public domain.
How to use it
- Not sure where to start? The "Start here" page takes a situation in plain words and sends you to the exact guide.
- Print any page. Use your browser's Print to make a clean paper copy of any guide — handy for someone without a device, or to read away from a screen.
- Share it. Send a link, copy the files onto a USB stick, or print and hand it over. However it reaches someone is fine.
Copy it, translate it, re-host it
This is meant to be a public good, not a destination. If it would help the people you serve — a library, a clinic, a shelter, a community group, a classroom — take it. Host it on your own site, translate it into another language, adapt it for your community. No permission needed, no attribution required, no strings.
